People in Coffee Shops

In coffee shops:

People google-chat,

Listen to iPods,

Talk to strangers,

And apply makeup.

Notice:

Owl necklaces; those were last year.

Combat boots; I have some too.

Long pants; it’s really hot outside.

Lots of laptops.

Coffee is:

Enlarged eyes

Youtube videos

Old girlfriends

And disgusted sadness.

Sometimes coffee:

Creates an artificial semblance

Of wakefulness

Energy and productivity

And memory.

I drink coffee:

When I get bored,

Have no choice,

Or forget that I don’t like coffee

All that much.

Coffee:

Distracts me with people walking past,

Tempts me with sliced lemon pound cake,

While listening to fellow coffee drinkers,

And wondering why they are in a coffee shop.
